Let’s get passionate!  What is passion anyway?  It’s having the drive, the desire and that burn to go and do the things that are important to you. It is a strong and barely controlled emotion.  Think about that.  When was the last time you felt so strongly about something that you could barely control it? Maybe your passion is strong and powerful in some areas and weak in others.  Or, you could be passionate about most things most of the time.  Or, you might be wondering, “Just where the heck did my passion go??”

Well, we’ve got a secret.  You don’t need to “find” your passion, because it’s already there, just waiting to be switched on!

Why passion?

When you go after anything you want in life, be it a new career, hobby, relationship, or weight loss; there ALWAYS comes a time when the going gets tough.  The excitement and newness wear off, there are bumps in the road, sometimes there seem to be huge roadblocks!  When that happens (and it will!), your passion will be there to show you the way.  When “the grind” of life is staring you in the face and telling you that what you wanted wasn’t a good idea and that you should just go back to where you were, that is where your passion will light you up and propel you forward.

Especially with weight loss, passion is vital.  You can have goals, like a number on a scale or a pants size, and those are great and important.  But your goals will ultimately feel empty without passion driving you on.  Your passion is what will keep you committed to your promise when you have a bad weigh in.  It’s what will keep you focused when you reach one goal and then wonder, “What’s next?”  It will give you the drive you need to have your transformation last a lifetime.

Where does passion come from?

So, what do you do if you don’t feel passion?  Or what if you don’t know what you’re truly passionate about? You may be tempted to look outside of yourself.  After all, if you’ve lost your passion for something, it makes sense that you would need to go out and find it, right?  Not quite.  The sneaky thing about passion that most people don’t realize is that it’s like electricity.  It’s always there, within you, ready to power on.  All you need to do is find your passion switch, turn that energy on, and let it light up your life!

There’s good news and bad news.

First the bad news:  Even though passion is flowing through you all the time, and you have the power to turn it on at any time, it will take some work on your part.  It will take you asking yourself questions that may make you uncomfortable.  You will need to think, and ponder, and be willing to look at parts of your life that you’ve been avoiding.

Now the good news:  When you’re doing that work, it doesn’t need to be perfect, and it doesn’t need to be heavy.  This is your passion after all, why not get creative and messy and have fun with it?  You can’t get it wrong, and you can change it up when you need to.  It’s definitely a place for a perfectly imperfect person to play and explore!

How to discover your passion switch

Set aside a chunk of time, even just 15 minutes.  Settle somewhere comfy where you can pause, breathe and take a look at your life.  Do it even if it makes you uncomfortable.  Have a notebook and pen handy, and ask yourself the following questions.  You can do this!

  1. Am I passionate about WHAT I do?  Why or why not?
  2. Am I passionate about WHY I do things?  Why or why not?
  3. Am I passionate about HOW I do things?  Why or why not?
  4. Am I passionate about WHO I do things for?  Why or why not?
  5. If I had my ideal body, all of the money I ever needed and had already traveled everywhere I wanted to go and was back home with nothing to do, what would I do next?  What would I do, if only for the fun and feeling of self-worth it would provide?
  6. When have I felt the most alive, accomplished, and satisfied in life?  What was I doing?  What about it gave me those feelings?
  7. What do I love? What lights me up and brings me joy?
  8. What comes easy to me? What do other people struggle with, but I can do effortlessly?
  9. What advice or assistance do people tend to ask from me?  What unique skills, insights, intuition, or knowledge do I have that most don’t?
  10. What am I doing to build those strengths?

You can do this exercise all at once, or in chunks.  You can go back and revisit and refine it.  Pondering on these questions will have you discover YOUR passion switch and the best way to turn it on.  Play around with being passionate, being ON FIRE about your life and your goals.  Use it as fuel, use it as vision.  Then, let us know what lights you up and why!
